Maths question of the day

nikkiisgross:

(AKA, someone help me with my homework)

prove that:

Cos(2x) = (1-tan^2 x) / (1+tan^2 x)

cos(2x) = cos^2 x - sin ^2 x

 = (cos^2 x - sin ^2 x) / 1

 = (cos^2 x - sin ^2 x) / (sin ^2 x + cos^2 x)

From this point, divide the top and bottom expressions by cos^2 x (this is equivalent to multiplying by cos^2 x / cos^2 x = 1) and then remember that

 tan x = sin x /cos x.

Why are numbers beautiful? It’s like asking why is Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony beautiful. If you don’t see why, someone can’t tell you. I know numbers are beautiful. If they aren’t beautiful, nothing is.
